Bio

(in english)
The work of Sofia Barão is structured as an inner journey exploring both personal and collective mythologies and symbolisms. In her practice, Sofia strives to capture a trace while embracing its inherently ephemeral nature. For her, color and texture act as a bridge, shaping the link between matter and spirit, the conscious and the unconscious, transcendence and immanence.
By placing the cycle of life—birth, metamorphosis, death, and rebirth—at the heart of her reflection, she questions what connects the intimate to the universal archetype. Originally from Portugal and now based in France, she draws her creative foundation from Saudade, that singular nostalgic melancholy that permeates her work.
Having grown up surrounded by threads alongside a mother who was a professional knitter, Sofia inherited much more than mere techniques: she received the language of the hands. While she explores various mediums throughout her series—from watercolor and acrylic to pastel, botanical dyes, and paper—her practice currently crystallizes around textiles.
At the core of her process lies a profound reflection on memory and the passage of time in all its forms. Her work is defined, in essence, as a quest for the invisible and mystical part that dwells within the human soul.
Her works are now part of private collections worldwide, including in Canada, Japan, France, New Zealand, and the United States.

“Threads leading from the past, interwoven with others formed by the present. Strewn between these - still invisible to us - lie those of the future.”
